eg:nitrogen n oxygen combine to form 5 different compounds.for instance let us take only 2 compounds,N2O & N2O4.

N20:mass of nitrogen-14*2=28
mass of oxygen-1*16=16
N204:mass of nitrogen-14*2=28
mass of oxygen-16*4=64.
now let us fix d mass of nitrogen as 14.
(MASS OF OXYGEN IN N20)/(MASS OF OXYGEN IN N204)
=(16/2)/(64/2)=(8/32)=(1/4)
this is nothing but 1:4,which is a simple whole no RATIO.
