What is meant by water equivqlent of a caloriemeter? When 400 gm of water at 30 C is mixed with 150 gm of water at 25 C contained in a caloriemeter, the final temperature is found to be 27 C . Find the water equivalent of a caloriemeter in the same units.

Water equivalent means that the amount of water that wud take up that much of heat as absorbed by the calorimeter!!!! This is an edited post this definiton is from a text book not my own as they wud be pathetic for xams but easy to comprehend!!! Now for the qs 0.4 * 4.2 * (30 - 27) = (0.15 ) * 4.2 * (27-25) + 2w Now u can solve for w = 1.89 I might have made some mistake here in calculation is ur answer 1.89 or 0.45!!!

Are you sure water equivalent means the thing you typed, or was it just a guess? what is 4.2 there? specific heat of water is 1

water equivalent of any substance means the amount of water having same heat capacity as that substance.
heat lost by water(hot)=400*1*3=1200 cal heat gained by water(cold) and calorimeter=150*1*2+ms*2=300+2ms
now, 1200=300+2ms 2ms=900 ms=450 cal
i hope i m correct.rate me if u plz

Thank you both of u are correct, Taruntanuj you shd read the question carefully, the question requires the answer in same units and also be careful with the calculations

Taruntanuji u r not correct...............because in the same step u have taken different values for the specific heat of water-as 4.2 and 1................but the other girl is right..........girls nowadays prove better
