from the roof a building  of 32m high water drops are falling at regular intervals .it is found that fifth drop begins to drop at the instant when the first drop touches the ground .at this interval find the distance between successive drops.the g=10m/s2

Q) from the roof a building  of 32m high water drops are falling at regular intervals .it is found that fifth drop begins to drop at the instant when the first drop touches the ground .at this interval find the distance between successive drops.the g=10m/s2

Sol) Time taken by first drop to fall on the ground = t

so 32 = (1/2) g t2

or t = 8 / 10 s

so if first drop falls at time = 0s

5th drop falls after = 8 / 10 s

thus time interval between each successive fall of drops = 2 / 10 s

HENCE WHEN THE FIRST DROP STRIKES THE GROUND THE DISTANCE TRAVELLED BY OTHER DROPS WILL BE

distance travelled by 2nd drop will be travelled in 6 / 10 s = (1/2) 10 (6 / 10)2 = 18m

Similarly, distance travelled by 3rd drop will be travelled in 4 / 10 s = 8m

And distance travelled by 4th drop will be travelled in 2 / 10 s = 2m

thus the distance between 1st and 2nd = 32 -18 = 14m

2nd and 3rd is =  18 - 8 = 10m

3rd and 4th is = 8 - 2 = 6m

4th and 5th is = 2 - 0 = 2m

The Scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, & he delights in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, life would not be worth living. Ofcourse I do not here speak of that beauty that strikes the senses, the beauty of qualities & appearances; not that I undervalue such beauty, far from it, but it has nothing to do with science; I mean that profounder beauty which comes from the harmoniuos order of the parts, & which a pure intelligence can grasp.

Let the time interval between the drops be T. The 1st drop has traveled a for 4T time.
(1/2)g(4T)2 = 32
T = (2/5)

Distances travelled by the drops:
(1/2)g(T)2, (1/2)g(2T)2, (1/2)g(3T)2,32
2m, 8m, 18m, 32m

Distance between the drops
2m, 6m, 10m, 14m
