to be honest guys i dont think ur getting it right
atleast i m suspicious of the way u think status is defined
its showing for me
CS at nit trichy >>>status 46
now going by ur logic that its only considering all india ranks
are u tellign me that ALL over india only 46 people have appliedwid better ranks
and i have a rank 13691
so out of 13k people only 46 above me applied
this just doesnt make sense
so what i think status is...that it shows the number of people ( for the NITs only) from ur elibility state...for aieee
and for colleges which deal wid only air Like LNMIIT or IIIT's they show status for applicants all over india ( coz its status for me is in thousands)
that is the most common sensical logic i could make out of it...

arnab, what you state is not correct. In NITs, where State Rank matters what is indicated in the Status is your standing amongst the candidates of same eligibility. You are from UP so the status indicates that how many candidates from UP are above you. In institutues like IIIT where there is no State quota, the AIR in only material.

Simple, yYou can get an idea of this from your status in IIIT and top class NIT. In IIIT it will be in thousand whereas in NIT Trichy or Surathakal it will be only in 300 or 400.

Hope it is clear. Yes online counselling is good only for top rankers i.e. upto 15000 or so. They will get some idea. For others, things will not be clear at all.
