hi all........m back....after 2 long months.....and glad tht ppl hav taken dis discussion 2 another level.....(some have even deviated frm the topic..)......i would THANK THE ADMINISTRATOR FOR PUTTING MY ARTICLE UNDER THIS SEPERATE SECTION...and ya...also to be mentioned are some new members like CHAMP123...who should learn to maintain the spirit of a discussion....

now coming to the point.....ppl hav given wndrful response to my post...but ...couldnt actually understand the main motive.!!!!.....i mentioned in my article...tht ppl hav started takin NITs as a brand which is wrng.....and i would stil stand by tht....if NITS r a brand then all NITS should b of more or less the same standard...which is not at allllllll the case!!!...nd when i say tht if needed...COMPROMISE on branch rather than the collg....thts bcoz....atleast today....everythg has got a scope....even civil engg. is coming up today...nanotechnology....energy engg....and many other branches are gaining importance.....and those who say....CIVIL IN IIT and COMPUTER IN Some XYZ collg.....well....do u know ...IT sector is the most overcrowded sector today!!!!...and how do u say tht this IT boom which has come...gonna persist 4ever...??? nd if u r talkin of salaries.....takin into consideration the overcrowdin in dis sector....salaries arent 2 large......and if they r offrd....they r offered only 2 a handful of candidates....wat bout d rest!!!....shud they b going FOR computer science engg....assuming tht they gonna b amongst those handful of ppl....and lastly studyin in a good institute is important...so tht one gets the right environment 4 his/her personality dev. and get many many facilities and opportunities .......job nd salary is jus one of dem!!!!!!!!!!!!...

I m frm nit warangal, half of ma college is IIT cleard but gt rank above 2500 so didnt go for iit and came here( keeping branch in consideration)
and placement is in ma college isatleast 10 times better den thapar and pec. talkin abt infrastructure, ma college provides me wid evrythng wat is essential 4 me in ma studies yaa but doesnt provide me wid an A.C rom cos it doesnt feel need 2 do so. All , if nt all den most of d private college is functionin jst becos dey provide us wid more facility and luxury which we as student do not desperatly need and finally brand name; go 2 any part of d country and jst say niy atleast all student will realise wat college u r talkin abt! Come here and talk abt Thapar and PEC noone hv even heard dere names here

No point in discussing this branch vs college issue. Its a very personal decision which varies from student to student.

Watever U said is totally wrong. It seems as if U hav ranked IITs as the esteem institutes. Nothing is best in this world. U can always find a thing better than the previous one.
The teaching is IITs is not very gud and U can get a proof of it by reading FIVE POINT SOMEONE by Chetan Bhagat.
And how can U say that NITs are nothing in front of IITs? GO and ask the people who did engg about 20-25 years ago. In those times, REC Allahbad was given more priority than an IIT.
Although IIT's placement is gud, they hav brand name etc etc but that does not mean that NITs are nothing in front of them. The only reliable colleges after IITs are some gud old NITs only.

U R badly mistaken. Please widen ur horizon of thinking and viewing things. View the things with all possible perspectives.

Wow , what a debate!!

Well , highest salaries are barely given to a couple of people.And please note that they are $ salaries.Here is a good post abt this from bits360.com:(slightly old)

We often hear huge starting salaries like 50 Lakhs etc, but how big are they really?Converting a dollar salary at the prevailing exchange rate , to Rs , doesnt give a true picture.
PPP(Purchasing power parity) is basically how costly is a basket of common goods , from country to country.India is often said to be the world's 4th Largest Economy.But it's just $1 Trillion and in absolute terms we are the 12th largest.However in terms of PPP , our economy is $4 Trillion which makes us the 4th Largest.Similiarly , per capita income of India is just $820 in nominal terms(Thats Rs 33600 at 1$=41rs) .But in terms of PPP , it is $3700!

Now for salaries.

A $100,000 p.a. salary is Rs 41 Lakh p.a. in nominal terms.But since you are working and living in the US , your spending is also more. So your $100,000 salary in US is actually just like getting a Rs 10 Lakh p.a. salary back in India!!!

Of course I haven't incl. savings/money transfers to India and all.I am assuming you are spending all of it there , living normally.
However , since u are living in the US , you are also enjoying better facilities like better Infrastru /Healthcare etc.
Just wanted to put stuff in the right perspective , thats all.So , we shld not reject domestic offers , just becuz they are paying " too less".

Also , there are many other problems with comparing "just" the placements.One of my profs who works for the placement dept told me that placements are just one of the outcomes , you can't put too much of weightage on that.

Consider these points:

1)This sem Satyam selected 87 of 197 students in BPGC.They are offering 3.6 lpa for a 1.5 yr bond , 4.2 lpa for a 3 yr bond.Now there are many people who love IT and would immediate;y jump on this offer.But still , most ppl , would rather like a core job.
Motorola which selected 4 students , is offering 4.3 lpa.Though its hardly better than Satyam's 4.2 , still , there'd be no qn of even thinking about Satyam when u have a Motorola job.
So , its really imp to see the placements in "Core Companies" and how many got in that.

2)(Selections) != (Acceptance)
Non Comp Sci students should note that != means "not equal to" :)
BPGC got 305 job offers for 197 students last sem.Now its ob(ob=obvious) that 1 student will accept just 1/even no offer(s).Also many who have planned to go abroad/MBA would have sat for placements just for safety.
What most colleges put up are the no of offers and how many.Often they'll add up to greater than the nos of students that are there.Now to calc avg salary , they'd take the avg of all "OFFERED" jobs.This will have a huge IT companies component(IT companies pay usually between 3.3 to 3.6 at BITS). So , this brings down the avg greatly , even though a lot of students don't even join these companies.

3)IIIT-H has extremely high avg salaries.But they don't have a lot of departments like Mech/Chem/Civil etc. where the salaries are significantly lower.
Its not that these branches are "Bad" , but often core jobs in these branches have a lower starting salary.

4)Mega salaries usually come from Foreign offers , Investment Banking , Management Consultancy , which rarely visit engg. colls.

Schlum which is no doubt pays a lot , also posts you to places like Siberia etc. for extended periods of time.Also , after joining such companies , you don't have much of a future.
If mega salaries are such an attraction , why not look at options like Commercial Airline Pilot , Merchant navy etc.?The best Indian institutes for these can place you far higher than even the best engg. colls of India.Why take the headache of engg?Its far difficult than operating a ship/aircraft.
Investment Banking , Management Consultancy etc. always pay more.But do you want to go in that line?Not that its bad , but if your interests have always been in core engg. , these options and their salaries shouldn't interest you.

Well , similar qns were raised abt the Goa campus.So u'll have to do some research and figure it out.
As for your placements qns , all I can say is that check out BPGC's placements(posted in Non IIT section).I feel that BPHC will have at least as good placements as BPGC.

IIT is not everything, it is the only thing .

People that don't clear iitjee or those who know that they wont be able to clear iitjee talk like this that NIT's are at same level of IIT's but the truth is that each one of us know that IIT's rule .It is a fact that each of engineering aspirant must have envied the IITians at some or other point of their life, its other aspect that they never say that they envy the IITians.

Firstly, I don't agree with those who say that you should never compromise with insti, even if you do with branch.. And dude... you don't get anything for jee ranks 5000-10000.. I was 3961 last year.. All i was getting was paper and pulp in guwahati, everything other than cs, ee in BHU and everything in ISM... Go down 1000 ranks and you have nothing!! But I do agree abt NITs. Friend of mine is in NIT Raipur. She tells scary stories.. More than anything what i feel is that these places(some of them) lack the proper atmosphere for studies.. Too much politics, awaragardi etc..
