Thanks a trillion to Karan, Nigeria and Puneet. Have rated you all. You are all doing a wonderful job and the ratings donot do justice to the clarity you bring to many young lives. Thanks yet again to all of you, on behlaf of all of us, the beneficiairies.
By the way, Pl see whether the following inferences of the undersigned, based on your replies to my queries are tenable.
1. The query wrt the matrix of choices appears to have been answered fully. Happy to note that NIT-S (ECE or comp Sc) is preferable to ISMU (BTech-Petro or MSC-integ) 2. wrt scope for further studies, gather from yr replies that (a) MS aborad in the UG field (b) MTech in India/aborad in the UG field and (c) MBA in India / abroad are possible (Am I right in my inference) for NIT-S(ECE /comp sc) 3. Wrt perceived reputation amongst academia / recruiters ' inter se between ISMU and NIT-S", does the forum have inputs to offer ? Would be obliged for an answer. Each institution is awesome and majestic, in its own respect and there is no absolute difference, I am sure. But difference in percpetions does exist (is inevitable too) and the same across academia / recruiters wrt these institutions is what one seeks to comprehend.

BTech Petro at ISM is certainly better than the NIT Surathkal Electrical & Computer option. I hv done some amount of research on this aspect & talked/written to various people ( incl some people who are working in the US presently after a MS there). I had also discussed this at length with an IIT Prof at Mumbai during my counselling this year. The feedback was very positive. 16 out of 45 students at ISM Petro got a job in a MNC in 2007 ......6 in Schlumberger itself. The salaries are simply great ... above 10 lakhs for sure .....(Check this out on the ISM Website..http://www.ismdhanbad.ac.in/noticeboard/placement.htm On that webpage, go to the bottom & click on the red icon. An Excel sheet will open up ).
The highest salary is supposed to be 44 lakhs...this bit of info on 44 lakhs is not on the Website though...I hv seen this on this blog at http://ismudhanbad.blogspot.com/)
Very well accepted in the US......Typically the students go to Stanford or Texas for MS.
IIM entry ...it might help as u r not a run of the mill Electrical/Mech Engg. By taking in a candidate from ISM/Earth Science discipline, the IIM wd be following its 'encourage the diversity' principle. So, it shd be easier to get into IIM from the ISM than say from Surathkal. The big players that impart IIM Coaching are there at Dhanbad too.
If u r looking for anything specific, do let me know. I ve consulted someone whose son passed out of IIT Mumbai with a 9.7 CGPA this year, who had an AIR of 36 4 years back, who was an Aditya Birla Scholar ( the few handpicked from the IIT/IIMs) & who is joining Stanford Univ shortly for a MS. This gentleman is a GM at ONGC & his wife is a friend of my mother. I had a 3800 odd AIR this yr & he categorically asked me to join Petro BTech at ISM. I hv a likely option of joining BITS-P Mech ( my score is 333) but most probably I will let it pass.
