According to Bohrs theory the electronic energy of H in nth orbit is given by En=(-21.76*10-19 J)(1/n2) Calculate the longest wavelength of light that will be needed to cause this transition. (Ans: 20.5 *10-7m)

Hi! Do specify transition from which orbit to which orbit.

I THINK THE TRANSITION IS FROM N=2 TO N=1 .......
BUT STILL I'D LIKE TO CONFIRM....

longest wavelength or shortest energy is possible only for the transition from 2-1, but the answer dosent tally with the answer given

longest wavelenth means shortest energy and so transition is from 2 to 1

21.76..... whatever b is given in the question we have to first convert in eV THAT'S COME OUT TO B BETWEEN 10.2 TO 13.6 eV THEREFORE IT CORRESPONDS TO LYMAN SERIES NOW WE KNOW THAT LONGEST WAVELENGTH FOR LYMAN SERIES COME AT TRANSITION n1=1 & n2=2 PLS REPLY IF MY EXPLANATION IS CORRECT

Q) According to Bohrs theory the electronic energy of H in nth orbit is given by
En=(-21.76*10-19 J)(1/n2)
Calculate the longest wavelength of light that will be needed to cause this transition.
Ans) Here longest wavelength is required only when minimum energy is required, Thus we should consider transition from n = 1 to n = 2 So energy change involved is = E2 - E1 = (-21.76*10-19 J)(1/4) - (- 21.76*10-19 J)(1/4) so wavelength = = hc / (E2 - E1) where h = plankcs constant c = speed of light. Substitute the values to get the results.

The Scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, & he delights in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, life would not be worth living. Ofcourse I do not here speak of that beauty that strikes the senses, the beauty of qualities & appearances; not that I undervalue such beauty, far from it, but it has nothing to do with science; I mean that profounder beauty which comes from the harmoniuos order of the parts, & which a pure intelligence can grasp. |
