(i)"Atom is chemically indivisible." - is this statement correct? tell me how it is corect or how it is wrong? (ii)in my textbook, it says,"atom is divisible in the sense that it has a structure, subatomic particles are known." don't u think this statement contradicts the first statement.

who said the first stment was true yes it was but with new inventions by rutherford it became clear tht it was divisible and the previous theory was discarded rate me if u think its correct

Atom is chemically indivisible but physically it is divisible in its constituents like electrons, protons and neutrons

The Scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, & he delights in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, life would not be worth living. Ofcourse I do not here speak of that beauty that strikes the senses, the beauty of qualities & appearances; not that I undervalue such beauty, far from it, but it has nothing to do with science; I mean that profounder beauty which comes from the harmoniuos order of the parts, & which a pure intelligence can grasp. |

In Dalton's theory, but usually not discussed is this: atoms can be neither created nor destroyed. An element's atoms do not change into other element's atoms by chemical reactions. For example, nitrogen and oxygen atoms stay as themselves even when combined. They can be recovered by decomposing the substance. As Dalton says:
"We might as well attempt to introduce a new planet into the solar system, or to annihilate one already in existence, as to create or destroy a particle of hydrogen. All the changes we can produce, consist in separating particles that are in a state of cohesion or combination, and joining those that were previously at a distance." As with most of Dalton's theory, this idea is not original to Dalton. It is Lavoisier who is responsible for the Law of Conservation of Mass in chemical reactions.

Atom is chemically indivisible because on dividing the atom into its constituents- electrons, protons, neutrons etc. it no more remains to be an atom of the same identity, i.e, its chemical properties change.
i.e, chemical properties of an atom with atomic number 3 is different from that of atomic number 2 (here the atom is divided to remove an proton but not an electron, because even after removing an electron , ions form whose properties are similar to that of the atom)
whereas physically it is divisible in its constituents.
Thus an atom(to be more precise an ion) is the smallest particle which cant be further subdivided
Thus Atom is chemically indivisible, but physically divisible
Hope it's clear now
