i've got a series of questions...

1) If you take a vessel filled with water to space... will the liquid exert force on its walls?
If yes, why?

If no, heres another question for you...
2) If you take a vessel filled with hydrogen to space... will the gas exert a force on its walls?

yup very much...both liquid and gas will exert force or rather a pressure on walls of glass...but glass exerts equal and opposite force on fluid 2 make it stay stationery...if the fluid pressure on wall is more thn the max force tht can b exerted by wall of glass...it'll break and liquid will flow...dis is wat is the concept used in magic tricks where one taps the top of a beer bottle and the bottom breaks and beer flows out...

if theres a pressure on the walls... can you specify some formula? (its in space... remember...)

and ur wrong about that magic trick thing

pressure exerted at base of vessel is dgh...d = density, h= total height of liquid column abv bottom...pressure on wall of vessel at any point wud b dgh, where h is height of liquid column abv tht point...
and why do u think tht explanation for magic trick is wrong buddy huh???? mayb ur thinkin of sum other magic trick.....hope u got the same one were one taps the top of bottle so the the pressure is transmitted thro liquid 2 the base of vessel which finnaly cannot tolerate tht extreme pressure breaks...

Umm.... the hdg formula derivation uses mg... doesnt that limit it to the earth/a place with gravity...

abt the magic trick thing... i'm an illusionist/magician myself... :)

ok and mayb for the trick thingi..the water pressure becums more thn air press so the bottom breaks...

in gravity free space water assumes a perfect sphere and not shape of the bottle dear...

Consider this... I have an enclosed vessel, and I fill it completely with some liquid. Then I send it to some place where there is no gravity. Will the liquid still exert some pressure on the walls?

Keep thinkin abt magic... explanation not necessary for believers, and nothing will suffice the non believers :)

in gravity freee space no pressure exerted in fact it might not even touch teh walls of glass as it assumes a perfect sphere and has nothin 2 do wid the shape of glass...
i feel im quite rite in understanding tht trick cuz i cant think of ny other reason... hmmmm

yarrrrr..... if i fill a box completely with water... will the water still turn into a sphere? :O thats strange......

ok, no further comments abt magic, but that definitely isnt the "method"... magicians arent soo smart :P

liquid will tend 2 take least energy state...now dont ask me why a sphere wud b least energy state in gravity free space..but mayb cuz it has least volume for a given surface area ....but m sure it wont remain in glass shape but take a sphere shape :P

i think in the liquid case, it wont exert any force on the walls of the container because its wieght dependent since in space weight = 0, there will be no such issue..
for gas, i have to think... :)

but as utkarsh said, if u fill the container's whole volume with liquid then it WILL fully occupy the space inside the container rather than moulding in any shape.. :P
