methanol n ethanol??

iodoform test...
it will only be given by ethanol and not methanol
yellow ppt will be formed by ethanol

yeah...
ethanol will give yellow ppt bcoz of presence of -CHOHCH3 grouping...but methanol doesnt have this grouping , so it will nt give the yellow ppt
CH3CH2OH + NaOI (sodium hypoiodite) ----> CH3CHO + NaI + H2O
then
CH3CHO + 3NaOI -----> CHI3 (iodoform) + HCOONa + 2NaOH..
and
CH3OH + NaOI----> no yellow ppt...

yes CH3CH2OH undergoes mild oxidation during the process to form CH3CHO which has CH3C=O linkage and hence gives positive iodoform test
