Hi,
I am aspiring for JEE-2008. I am presently studying in XIth std and have enrolled in FIITJEE classroom program. I know I have the potential and I am working hard but some how or other, something crops up that prevents me from scoring the marks I want. I have done some introspection and divided my weaknesses as such:
1.  Lack of concentration/ Complacency:  I feel that my attention span is very low. I am unable to sit for long hours at a stretch. I keep getting easily distracted. While studying, I become relaxed after solving a couple of problems and at times divert my attention to other things. Please advice me!! Some people I know suggested meditation to improve your concentration. Is that useful?? I have the 'fire' in me at times.. but it subsides too soon. please help..
2. Examination temperament: I study eveyrhing and I know how to solve to a particular problem. But I am not able to perform at my best during exams. A sort of nervousness crops over me and mind becomes blank. The same problem, I could have solved within a second under normal circumstances.
3. Careless errors: I used to make a lot of careless errors earlier. Through practice, I have put a check to it. But now the problem is... I am wasting tooo much time checking my answers! I doubt every step I do and double check, often wasting a lot of time only to reaslise that I was correct in the first place.
Please help and tell me what I need to do. And in general, how many do I need to put in every day for JEE preparation? And how long should I sit at a stretch while studying?
Thanks for your time.

hi!well dude, let me first congratulate u on identifying your weak areas.this is one thing which most students lack.as for ur study timetable,i suggest u study for 50-55min and then take a break for 5-10min.just roam around or do whatever u want to do in these 10 minutes.then again study for 55 min and repeat this timetable.by doing so,ur mind will remain fresh and u will not get bored also..
meditation helps a lot..do meditate for 15-20min every morning..well,as for the exam temperament, nervousness is a part and parcel of every student's life.just try to give ur best during the exams.at the end of the exam,u shuld come out of the hall and say that i gave my best....keep trying till u succeed.
now coming to the careless errors section,ur methodology is quite apt..just remember to not waste too much time on a question.if u have even the slightest doubt, then just leave the question as u can't take chances in a negative marking paper...
it doesn't matter that much as to how much u study but what matters is how effectively u study.after all doing 10 good problems is far better than doing 100 easy problems,rite...
keep on working hard and i am sure that success awaits u in the future.
all the best!!!

never give up in life.keep trying till you succeed.don't forget to rate my answers if u find them to be correct as it will only boost my confidence....

Hey konichiwa2x, I am quite glad to hear that there are others who face the same problems as I do.every time after an examination i also feel that i could have done better.I do very well in my classes, but that does not seem to reflect in my performance in tests. But I have learnt that we just have to keep trying hard and surely we will get our technique right.I know we will get over our problem!

thanks man.. glad to know I am not alone. I keep getting too frustrated and sometimes slump into a very bad mood and end up wasting a couple of days..

I've done a hell lot of thinking and I realise all these problems can be overcome if we have 100% control of the mind.. an ability to focus and work that extra mile. A person with a very disciplined mind definitely wont have any problems because if we do analyse our mistakes, it seems that it is we who create it outselves..
So, I am really trying to learn to keep the mind in control.. I need all the help I can get..

Any say from the experts?

Hi,
Following tips will help you:
Whenever you feel nervous or distracted, take 5-10 deep breaths and you'll feel relaxed. Concentration and number of hours increases gradually with practice.

You should put a timetable in place on a weekly basis and stick to it. This way you will be able to stretch the time span. For IIT JEE, a certain level of confidence is certainly required, but not over confidence. The jinx of not performing in the exam hall will break as you gradually start taking up more tests on your own. For example, take a last year question paper at home and do it in the stipulated time just as if you were in an exam hall. More self-tests means more confidence and better time management. You have to be relaxed in exam halls and put your mind in your question paper. There will always be hoards of people around you in any exam. You have to learn to cut off from the rest of the world while writing your exam. This will come with practice and constant mental affirmation that I am here to do my best.

Again, if you attempt a question with clarity and answer it with concentration, chances of errors and the need for re-checking will go down. Attempt questions that you feel more confident answering in the first go. Then the ones you think you can get through and so on. Leave the ones you are absolutely not confident about because negative marking can take your score down.

Of course, deep breathing and meditation help you gain concentration. You should be able to spend 4-5 hours to self study daily. At a stretch, at least one and a half hour.

All the best with your preparation.
