my doubt is that why two   OH   groups are attached then why the compound is not stable and it dissociate into water why pls reply

hi,when two OH groups are attached, repulsion between the groups tends to render the compd. unstable.this is mainly because of streic hindrance.so,to acquire extra stability, the compd. loses water molecule.hope the thing is now clear to u.....cheers

never give up in life.keep trying till you succeed.don't forget to rate my answers if u find them to be correct as it will only boost my confidence....

nishant is absolutely rite
when 2 OH groups are attached to the same carbon there is repulsion between them which is known as steric hindrance
as a result the compound is less stable and to achieve stability
one water molecule dissociates.....
this happens not only in the case of 2 OH groups but even if more than 2 OH groups are present only one water molecule dissociates

due to lp-lp repulsions of lps on oxygen i think one hydrogen of the 2 oh groups becomes acidic and it detaches and attaches to the other oh group and gets eliminated as a water molecule. the formation of water also depends on the other groups attached to thje carbon bearing the 2 oh groups

I think u ve got the point tejasvi. Bcos, two -OH grps are not suficient to create steric hindrances (clear from the existance of stable Al(OH)3  ) The reason u gave can be easily undrestood if one studies the mechanism of such reactions.
HEY, I ve posted a message 2 u in the column 'Arihant or Tandon'

each o atom has two lone pairs. thus there are 4 lone pairs in total....
this structure is not quite stable. since lp-lp repulsion maximum, elemination happens n one water molecule comes out

why the hydrogen bonding donot occur between them by hydrogen bonding they became more stable
