What are coriolis forces ? I read about them in HC Verma .Pls post useful and relevant information .

. The Coriolis effect caused by the rotation of the Earth is responsible for the precession of a Foucault pendulum and for the direction of the rotation of cyclones. In general, the effect deflects objects moving along the surface of the Earth to the right of the direction of travel in the Northern hemisphere and to the left of the direction of travel in the Southern hemisphere. As a consequence, winds around the center of a cyclone rotate counterclockwise on the northern hemisphere and clockwise on the southern hemisphere. In the inertial frame of reference (upper part of the picture), the black object moves in a straight line. However, the observer (red dot) who is standing in the rotating frame of reference (lower part of the picture) sees the object as following a curved path.

Hi Umang, I can explain u what coriolis force is..... But, for more clarity, refer pg 100-101 of a book by name--"Mechanics and thermodynamics" by Basavaraju and Ghosh (TMH) I m sure that u'll njoy the book. By the way, I posted my name in the same column where u asked it

HI See, assume two persons 1,2 standing on a large rotating disc. 1is at the centre with a ball in his hand and 2 is on the edge. When 2 throws the ball to 1, it actually misses him . A person on the ground knows that this is because the disc had carried away 2 while the ball didnot deviate its st line path (here, the ball is not rolled on the disc) But for 2, he feels that he is at rest and the ball has actually moved. He accounts this to a pseudo force called Coriolis force. It comes into picture only when the ball has certain velocity.....ok Hey, i ve answered ur rainbow qn...pls see kgh
