hi friends this is
THE IUPAC CONVENTION FOR WRITING THE ELECTRCHEMICAL CELLS..
1.. A single vertical line ( | ) represents a phase boundary between the metal ion and its electrode..
Zn|Zn2+
2.. It should be noted that electrode should be written on the left of the metal ion in anode half cell while it should be written on the right of the metal ion in cathode half cell.
eg. Zn |Zn2+ Cu2+ | Cu
3.. A double vertical line ( || ) represents the salt bridge which allows ions to flow through but it prevent the electrolyte from mixing..
4.. The anode half cell should be written on the leftside and cathode half cell should be written on the right side in a complete cell diagram.
5.. In a complete cell digm, a salt bridge seperates the anode halfcell and cathode halfcell.
eg.. Zn | Zn2+ || Cu2+ | Cu
6.. The inert electrode should be enclosed within the brackets.
eg..
Mg | Mg2+ || H2+ | H2 (Pt)
7.. The emf involved in the reaction should be written on right hand side of the cell reaction..
eg..
Zn | Zn2+ || Cu2+ | Cu E= 1.6 eV
8.. If the emf value is negative then the cell reaction is not feasibel in the given direction.. but it takes place in the opposite direction.
9.. A reversible cell is one which changes its direction of the cell reaction if the current is reversed.
