I think it is MgF2 because mostly compounds of 1 and 2
group are coloured

the answer given to me is CuF2
 
but could you tell me how do you arrive at the answer from its electronic config?

see CuF2 will have 2 F atoms and Cu in +2 oxidation state.....
hence u can calculate...the config of Cu+2 and u'll get the ansr....

THE BASIC THING IS IF YOU HAVE d-orbital not fully-filled in which transition of e- can take place then you will have the salt colored.........

so CuCl is the answer very well explained above........

the d-block elements normally form coloured compounds.........
as Cu belongs 2 d-block elements its compounds r coloured

@panks_01 its not always like that....those transition elements which in their ionic form have fully filled d-orbital will not have colored salts.......

yes CuF2 will be coloured....
