Hi everyone!
13th April. Not very far, we must say! Being this close to the exam, needless thoughts keep popping up in one?s mind all the time. What if I don?t clear the exam? What will my parents feel and my friends say? What if I get a poor rank? What if I have to drop a year? Etc. Etc. These thoughts trouble you even when you are trying hard to concentrate and study. With but precious little time left for the exam, wouldn?t it be great if you could improve your concentration and focus more on your studies, rather than brooding over things about which nothing can be done right now? In this article, we tackle this problem and talk about building concentration.
First of all, it might help you to think over the irrationality of these troubling thoughts.  The time you?ve already wasted is a thing of the past. The time you spent on Orkut or Facebook or the times you overslept are all things of the past. There?s no use thinking about the past, because the past won?t come back. The exam is a thing of the future. What happens in the exam is a thing of the future. What result you get is a thing of the future. What will you do if you don?t get through the exam or get a poor rank is also a thing of the future. And nothing can be obtained from worrying about the future. The best you can do is to prepare for the future. Prepare to the utmost of your capabilities. And think about the future when you actually face it, when it actually becomes your present.  Someone wise once said: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That?s why we call it the present. Think about this dictum deeply.
We are all imperfect minds, and even if we are convinced thoroughly of the irrationality of these thoughts, they will still remain to trouble us to some extent. So let us talk about more practical ways to deal with the problem. Here are some general guidelines you should follow which will help you dramatically increase your concentration:
  • Never oversleep. It has two disadvantages: it makes you lazier, and the time you waste in oversleeping subconsciously becomes a cause of worry for you.
  • Never overeat, especially before you have to study. Again, this is because overeating makes one feel sleepy.
  • Do a minimum amount of physical exercise everyday, compulsorily.
  • Do some deep breathing exercises, for at least 10 ? 15 minutes, every time before you sit down to study. Those who regularly practice meditation show exceptional levels of concentration. Inculcate this habit in your daily schedule as much as possible. Within two weeks, the difference will start showing.
  • Make sure the surroundings in which you study are quiet, isolated and well-lit. It would be advisable to avoid music while studying, though this is not necessary and depends on the individual.
  • Do not study for more than 10 hours a day. Also, whenever you start feeling bored of studying, do something else for a while and then resume your studies, instead of stretching yourself.
  • If your parents question you excessively about your preparation, strictly tell them not to do so. In their over-concern for you, they?ll tend to give you more worry than required.
  • If all your friends have to talk about is exam preparation and its associated nervousness, avoid them as far as possible. Associate only with those friends who are confident and/or have something else to talk about than just exam issues.
  • Stick to whatever study schedule you?ve made for yourself, rather than changing it every now and then. This is again very important if you want to study with concentration.
  • And yes, don?t forget your daily dose of fun, whatever it might be. On our part, we used to have lots of fun even when we were deeply involved in preparing for the JEE mains in 2003. For one of us, fun was playing the guitar. For another, it was swimming, while for a third, it was playing high-end videogames.
Hope you find this article helpful. If you seriously follow the advice outlined here even for a week, you?ll have no further concentration issues.

Hope it helps
