Hi!
Is there any difference between sp3d2 hybridisation and d2sp3 hybridisation??

Using this, what would be the hybridisation of [Co(NH3)6]3+ ?

PS: This question came in my exam. I wrote sp3d2 - but our maam says otherwise and that there is a difference between them
If there is, please explain
Thanks!~

yes, there is a difference between the 2.
even though both are octahedral in shape, d2sp3 hyb. usually occurs in complexes.

the important difference to notice is that in d2sp3 hyb compounds, the inner d orbitals are filled, before the s and p orbitals; whereas in sp3d2, the outer d orbitals are filled, after the s and p orbitals.

hope it was useful

Thanks!! But I have another doubt now
Doesnt the whole concept of hybridisation means intermixing of orbitals? How can there be a different d orbital which is filled before s and p??

have you learnt about coordination compounds yet??
because if you have, then my explanation will make more sense. otherwise, it will be a bit difficult for u to follow.

d orbital doesnt comes before s n p orbitals bt in complexes d orbital is filled up first!!

fillin up of orbitals depends on pairing up energy and energy due to field produced by attackin species..such as ligands in case of complexes...in case the attackin species is highly active..i.e. produce v.strong field then the enegy produced due to this overcome the energy required for pairin up..so the unpaired elec present in an inner orbital get paird up n the newly incomin electrons also can get accomodated in the inner d orbital itself... but in case of wk attackin species...the pairin up energy cannot be supplied hence the incomin elecrons fill up the outer orbital..this results in the diff between d2sp3 and sp3d2..similarly v also have dsp3,sp3d etc

yes, it does. read that and you will understand the different hybridisations  much better..
