HOF exist. As to why O has zero oxidation state, well, i dont think it is something which can be explained theoritically, it is just a fact.

oxdn state is a hypothetical concept started to understand things better. Hence we cannot explain the 0 oxdn state of O in HOF.

compound HOF is not possible beacuse it most electronegative hence it will take the shared pair of electron totally toward itself and will get detach form OH...

are yaar! you saw it in pradeep, isn't it? well iwas struck in the same problem and i think F can't have -1 as its the most e-negative, hence O has 0 oxydation state.

hey ! i hav somewhat an explanation for this. the structure of HOF is H-O-F. now break O-F bond. F gets -1 and O +1 as F is more electro-ve. similarly, on breaking H-O bond, O gets -1 and H gets +1 oxidation state. So, totalling O's states, we get +1-1=0. hence, O has 0 oxidation state !!! I hope u've understood !!! pls rate if found useful !

Like many have pointed out F has -1, O has 0 and H has +1 in HOF. The compound most likely dissociates as H+ and OF-. The reason for this is the proximity of oxygen and fluorine in the electronegativity series - they are next to each other. Its much easier for the OF group to pull away electrons from H rather than F from O. O develops zero oxidation state for that very reason. Electrons pulled away from hydrogen towards oxygen and fluorine, being more electronegative than oxygen, pulling electrons from oxygen (even if its not complete)
