not sure, but CuO gives OH- ions in solution,
and SO3 forms sulphuric acid in solution

CuO is a METAL oxide and, in aqueous state, it has the tendency to give OH- ions by forming Cu(OH)2 as akhil_o said...

SO3 is a non metal oxide and in aquoues state, forms H2SO4 which give H+ ions freely..

acids form hydrogen ions in water. bases form hydroxide ions (OH with a negative one charge) in water.

CuO, which is copper II oxide, will form neither.

in chemistry, a salt is any ionic compound, made from a metal cation and a non-metal anion. CuO is a salt, but not one to eat.

interesting tip to find whether an oxide is a basic/acidic oxide:

add a molecule of water and see if the compound has a OH- grp or H+ grp

for example, SO3 --> on adding H20 we get H2S04
similarly, CuO ----> Cu(OH)2
other examples which this trick works is SO2, BaO,NO2, etc..

there are two ways...
first...check the stability of conjugate base...if its quite stable..then it is a strong acid...

second..check whether the specie is deficient or rich of electrons..if deficient..then it acts as acid(lewis)...

one more...more is the ionisation of H+ ions in aquoues medium...stronger is the acid.

and the conjugate here i m refering is formed after the compound has lost 1 H+ ion///
