ok sorry to be hurtful (maybe) but more than 80% of people outside India still know it as a land of curry, tigers, elephants and tantriks !

Singapore gets nearly twice the number of tourists in a year than India does. In fact, if you make even a brief study of world tourism trends and data, you'll learn that, for all its cultural and geographical diversity, India hardly attracts any tourists.

Singapore - 7.3 million a year (2006)
India - 4.4 million a year (2006)
France - 79.1 million a year (2006) (yes, that's seventy-nine!)

Going by the figures, foreigns don't seem to know much about India's 'unity in diversity', a phrase that is bandied around as the ultimate proof of India's cultural richness.

@ ashgirl

What's the point of going into the reasons? You're missing the point. What I wanted to point out was that you were wrong in hinting that India is a big hit with tourists around the world. The facts speak for themselves. We are performing way below our potential when it comes to tourism. And the point of proving you wrong there was to simply dispel the wrong notion that people of other countries are greatly interested in India's culture. How many Indians do you think are intereted in, say, Slovak culture?

And even if the rest of the world were interested in our culture, that should not be the criterion to decide the worth of our culture.

And with the growing number of tourist murders in places like goa which are the main attraction of tourists in India, the 4.4 million a year figure is going to drop drastically...
