explain the use of Ag2O in Arndt Eistert reaction.
I mean i know the reaction mechanism,no need to write that
the use of SOCl2 forming RCOCl, formation of diazoketone using CH2N2,then loss of nitrogen in presence of Ag2O,then Wolff rearrengement......then on hydrolysis it gives the carboxylic acid.
Just tell me why Ag2O is required to remove nitrogen.??

i thought that the ans will be there, nevertheless its bcos its a very good agent for formation of ketene and also helps in the Wolff rearrangement :)

After the acid is converted to diazomethyl ketone, a metal catalyst (Silver, copper etc) or light is used to convert it to a carbene so that it can undergo Wolff rearrangement..

So silver oxide is a catalyst here...

N for those of you who don't know the mechanism:

Happines is like a butterfly;
the more you chase it,
the more it will elude you,
but if you turn you attention to other things,
it will come and sit softly on your shoulders...

hey Ag+ acts as a catalyst to cause wolf rearrangement in the formation of ketene from RCOCHN2 via a carbene intermediate refer mechanism in wikipedia!!!!
