The addition of solid KCN to water increases the pH of water.
True or false??
It is false right??Bcoz KCN will cause the water to ionize into H+ and OH- ions and so H+ inc. and thus pH should decrease.Where am i wrong??
Which of the foll is most soluble??
a)Bi2Si3(Ksp=1*10-70)
b)MnS(Ksp=7*10-16)
It should be a right as since Ksp is very small,ionic product will easily exceed the Ksp.

this is becoz when whater will be ionised to H+ and OH- then the concentration will be very very less. therefore the ph will be almost contant.

consider this....
now,what do we mean by more soluble???
it means dat a greater amount of the substance is soluble without getting ppt.....
now.if a salt has a higher value of ksp,it obviously means that the ionic product generally remains less than the ksp,so the salt dissolves in water....
similarly,a salt with a lower value of ksp gets pptd on adding a small amt as its ionic product exceeds the ksp on adding small amts,hence it doesnt dissolve in water to the same xtnt as d salt with gr8r ksp....
i hope u gt it..... as for the second part.... u r considerin only the ionisation of water...kcn ionises too.... formation of koh along wid hcn takes place.... now, as u know, HCN is a relatively weaker acid ,while KOH is a stronger base.... so,the pH of the solution increases due to its basic nature!!!!!!

KCN + water --------> KOH +HCN
KOH is a much stronger base than HCN....... so pH increases....

pH increases when H+ decreases and in this case H+ is increasing so pH should decrease..i didn get ur argument regarding KOH being a strong base
