the 27% reservation for OBC's in IIT's too!!! It is to be implemented this academic year(08-09). To the dismay of general students, the Supreme Court upheld the Constitution amendment law providing for 27 per cent quota for OBCs in IITs, IIMs and other Central educational institutions .

The IITs could implement the 27 per cent quota for OBCs in a phased manner after the Supreme Court on Thursday gave its nod for reservation in institutes of higher education.

"We cannot implement the 27 per cent quota in one go. It has to be done in phased manner. Let us see how to do this," said Prof Surendra Prasad, Director, IIT-Delhi.

He said the scenario as regards implementation of the quota would be clear in the next two to three days. "It is too early to react. We have to consult with the Ministry. We will have to think about how to implement it," Prasad said.

There are around 4,000 seats in the seven IITs in the country and as per an earlier plan, the institutes may increase the seats to up to 5,000 if the quota is implemented in the coming academic year.

I clearly disagree with supreme court....it's unfair!!!

there was a big debate abt this yesterday in goiit and jus now it has stopped and u r planning to re-open it, huh?

see, there's not gonna be any decrease in the number of seats for genereal category in any institute, rather there's gonna be a hike.
the following is an extract from THE HINDU daily
(this is for IIM-C and somewat similar shud be the case with all other central institutions)

"...steps are under way to revamp facilities at the institute and the number of seats would be increased from 300 to 462 by 2010. This institute has the highest number of seats among the IIMs. Beginning with a six percent increase this year, the number would be increased by 54 percent by 2010. The seats were being increased by more than the percenteage of reseravtion stipulated for the Other Backward Classes (27 percent) so as to prevent any reduction in the general category seats. "

got it? so, such a thing shud be the case with all other institutes. so, stop worrying!
