hey red p +hi is one of the strongest reducing agent
it is specifically used in organic reactions i.e the ones in which we wish to convert a
ketone or alcohol or aldehyde directly to the parent hydrocarbon.
anything taken with red p +hi will directly give u the hydrocarbon
eg ch3oh will get converted to ch4 so will ch3cho get converted to c2h6

yeah it is a reducing agent .
eg. it converts cyclo propane -----------> n-propane.
to reduce the steric effect.

See , HI is used as a reducing agent ,so It gets oxidized to I2 .   this I2 is a very good oxidizing agetn . This may react with , the reactants and it may lead ot a very diff .reacn.
So , red P is added which reacts with I2 to give back , HI ,
The reacn . goes like this. (this is usually in aq . mdm.)

P + H2O ------> P2O5 + PH3
PH3 + I2 --------> HI +P
Thus I2 is prevented from reacting wiht , the reactants.
 I'm not sure with the reacn.s  (unbalanced) , Please coorect if wrong, I verify also later .But it definitely prevent s I2 from reacting with teh reactant mix.
That's 4 sure.
