it is bcoz potential energy is due to attractive gravvitational force.

Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.

This is because... as the distance between two particles (under consideration) decreases, their gravitational potential energy also decreases... but according to d equation

U=GMm/r

gravitational potential energy is inversely proportional to d distance between particles...

in order to satisfy both d conditions... a negative sign is introduced such that... as the distance decreases, numerically gravitational potential energy will also decrease...

say if i'm wrong...!!!

Beacause gravitational force is always attractive in nature.

The Scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, & he delights in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, life would not be worth living. Ofcourse I do not here speak of that beauty that strikes the senses, the beauty of qualities & appearances; not that I undervalue such beauty, far from it, but it has nothing to do with science; I mean that profounder beauty which comes from the harmoniuos order of the parts, & which a pure intelligence can grasp.

negative potential energy of a system meansthe system is bounded.
Suppose a particle in a bounded system has -x J energy.
If we apply +x J energy to the particle , it now has 0 J energy and hence is out of the bounded system.

If we apply +(x+2) J energy, the particle will come out of the system with 2J energy..
