Any1 plz gimme sum notes on synthesis of Melphalan. I hav searched d Wiki but m not gettin it nywher so plz.....hlp meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Melphalan is derivative of phenyl alanine ( as you have already searched in viki you must have noted the structure).Following steps will give the desired melphalan

1.Nitration of phenylalanine will introduce nitrogroup in the para position as there is steric hinderance at ortho position.

2.Reduction of the nitro group to amino group with metal and acid.

3.Alkylation of amino group with ethylene dichloride ( 2 mols as we want to replace both the hydrogens of the NH2 group) . This gives us the desired product.
