the given eqn. can be written as (x+y)2-8a(x+y)-9a2=0.
Now,put t=x+y,the eqn. becomes t2-9at+at-9a2=0 (t-9a)(t+a)=0.
Hence,The eqns are x+y-9a=0 and x+y+a=0.Hope you got it now.
