you will get da councelling letter soon. they have given da opening and closing ranks of admitted students to all courses at all da iit. it will give u a fair enough idea. also, u can give as many choices as u wish.
i am not very sure of da new iits. they may be below da existing ones and it-bhu. their infrastructure etc... wont be at par with da iits either. so think well before opting for them. with ur rank, i think u will get a good one in existing iits.
iitg is a relatively new iit. it doesnot have ot its credit the huge experience and that good brand name as other iits. but still, it is a good one and better than many other colleges like most of da nit. but bits, it-bhu and may be ismu has a better brand name than iitg

there are 8 new iits beeing set up. earlier it was decided to start 3 dis year, but just few weeks back, they have decided to start 6 this year. that is why da red book has info abt only 3 new iits as it would have been printed before da decision to start 6 iits was taken. in da paper enclosed, they have clearly said about startin 6 iits this year.

If you are very keen on electrical or CSE go for teh new IIT's. Else take aero or chemical in kgp.

as far as the new iit's are concerned they are offering only core branches
which are
cse,electrical and mechanical
and these branches are very good (one of the top notch branches)
and i am in very strong favour of the brand name of iit's
hope you exercise your choice carefully
best of luck for councelling
if you have an iit degree in your hand top universities will be ready to take you in post graduation(including stanford and MIT and horward to name a few)
but a lil problem with the 6 new iit's are that the 3 iit's that were later introduced (including iit punjab and 3 more) there are mentor iit's assigned to them and the classes for first year will be taken in these mentor iit's and then the students will be transferred to the respective iit's from second year onwards
check the jee website for further info

think carefully, very carefully before going for the new iit's. i very strongly feel that the most major distinguishing feature of iit's from other colls is the campus life. this you won't experience to the hilt in the new iit's (possibly an experience even worse than the other colls). so just don't blindly jump for the iit-tag in the new iit's. think of the existing iit's.
