hey thsi was favorite ques wen i used 2 prep 4 jee...3 years..wid no success.... .. c u peedle 2 move the cycle...nd all efforts go only 2 bac wheel agreeed??? if not go 2 kg nd study again!!! so it is ur muscle power that applies torque nd hence the rear wheel rotates in forward direction!!! so 4 obvious reaons evry1 feels friction oppposes it..which is a pitfall... if u look ta point wer the tyre touches the soil it is actually moving in backward direction... nd hence friction pushes it forward....hmmm... so it is this external force that moves ur cycle..nd dont feel itz internal force,..began 2 work....... now... ask ur self who on earth is rotating the front wheel... umm???think ,..u dont peddle it!!!! so as per only input it should not rotate at all coz ur not rotating it..butstill it rotates who is rotating..???/c wen bac wheeel begins 2 rotate friction pushes the cycle forward nd hence the front wheel also begins to move forward and now look at point of contct of frontwheel nd ground....actuall the wheel shd b dragging but it is friction that rotates it!!! and hence friction acts in forwrd direction 4 rear tyre nd bacward 4 forward tyre!!!!
the above story was wen ur cycling..... wen u just relax lik a down or wen ur too fast..... itz already that u u r moving nd ur wheels r rotating...so once u stop peddling they shd stop but they dont coz of inertia but gradaully they stop y????coz friction acts in bacward direction in both wheels!!! so this ques has 2 cases..wen being peddled nd wen not being peddled!!!!
so chillax!!!!nd do rate me if i was helpful if u ahve sum more dbt.. plz ask but b specific!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!chillax!!!!!!!!!!

the front wheel performs translatory motion so the friction is backwards
now when we peddal that torque produced is used to rotate the wheel in clockwise and we know friction opposes motion so its direction is forward this time

yes
when u r paddling friction on back wheel is in fwd dir & on front wheel in bwd dir
but when u r not paddling den of course there is no friction static or kinetic friction

wen u start paddlng 2 move the cycle forward, the back wheel tries to rotate n the cycle moves forward due to friction d forward directn. this forces the front whell to rotate. but this time the friction is in the backward directn.
But when the cycle is already in motion, then both frictn is in the forward directn

Its backward on front wheel and forward on back wheel and pkarthik's explanation is perfect.

Ya, friction's direction is backward on front wheel and forward on back wheel.
