Could be several reasons:
Maybe early counseling is one of them
People are slowly willing to spend more on education
People have got relatively pathetic AIEEE and JEE scores compared to last year
More popularity and demand

dude, Manipal is an above average college....... if they increase seats obviously people will join...............
AFAIK they doubled the seats from last year. that doesnt mean Manipal is improving........

well i think the reason for it is competition which has increased a lot this yr compared to last yr....maybe the reason why ppl have not performed that well in AIEEE coz of competition...not just MIT counselin but even Comedk counselin was affected this yr

well....there are a few reasons which i feel has contributed to this pattern of the counselling :
1.abolishing the state quota in the NITs.
2.improvement in the level of placements(on par with many nits and above a few)
3.very good quality hostel life.
4.very less ragging(the director has gone very strict over this from 2006 and the situation has been improving day by day)
5.reasonable fee(considering all the facilities provided along with the basic needs)
6.a very good brand perception of the university (very well recognised abroad) although mainly due to the kmc manipal.
7.many still not trusting the quality and future of the new iits and bits hyderabad(to the extent they should)

1. Abolishing state quota will increase the number of students from weaker states however decrease the number of students from competitive states.
2.maybe,
3.one of the best campus life in the world however that was the case even before, so it does not justify this
4.people won't give this point that much importance so as to bring the cutoffs sky high
5.more like people are willing to spend more now
6.not really, however the public perception is increasing.
7.not really
MY REASONS
1.Early counseling so people can't refund money and they don't want to let it go waste
2.People are willing to spend more on education now
3.Many people have scored badly in JEE and AIEEE and they take refuge in Manipal, VIT etc in case they get something better here
4.Earlier perception was that of a rich brat which is now turning to a merit based one which makes the public perception much better
5.Improvement in placements over the years
6.It is a decent college no doubt with a good campus life and if you are getting nothing better and don't mind shelling out then why not

@bayernrocks - from what i have heard, u can get a seat there just by paying a sum of a few lakh rupees. thats why i called it "an above average college".

AFAIK there are only NRI seats and no management ones. NRI seats exist even in PSG, PEC, DAIICT, JIIT, MAIT etc
Management seats etc exist in RVCE, VIT etc.
