light actualll having dual nature -particle and wave nature as a wave it has frequency, wavelength and yeah electric n magnetic field ....light itself is not a particle ....particle in a matter carries charge and in atoms electros carry charge...... Electric charge is a characteristic of some subatomic particles. It is quantized

I can add to the question: 'and why isn't light deflected by electrical and/or magnetic fields?'

Light has both particle and wave nature. But the electromagnetic character comes, because of the wave nature - and not the particle nature! Thus there's no question of charges. u obviously can't compare light to electrons because(though they are fundamental entities in their domain), they themselves are made up of leptons and quarks. As per ur question on deflection in fields, I'm not 100% sure about the answer I'm going to give u. Point is that light has too high speeds in their particle form, than their wave form. So the time they take to pass within a field is so infinitesimally small, that they do not experience the charges, thus there is no question about deflection.
Rate me if correct.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

DUDE, I DONKNO ABT THT. See, light energy is transmitted thru the rapidly oscillating electric and magnetic fields rite? It is these fields that store the energy of the radiation. The particle nature is irrelevant here. It arises only when light interacts with matter. When light propagates it has it's wave nature right? So if it is so wouldn't external magnetic and/or electrical fields affect it even if the effect is ,say, infinitesimally small?

The speed of light varies, depending on the medium. Albert Einstein proved that light is the fastest moving thing in a vacuum, with its speed being roughly 186,000 miles per second. In water, the speed of light slows to 140,000 miles per second. Its speed is 124,000 per second in glass. Through a diamond, the speed of light is 77,500 miles per second.
since it has to much of speed & particles of light also have very small [infinitesmally small]mass !!!!
therefore they are not deflected in electric & magnetic field !!!! rate me if it wasa helpful or correct me if i am wrong !!!!!

Look the formula for the force between charges is given by the law of electrostatics i.e. F=kq1q2/r^2. Here light has no charge on it because it has no rest mass i.e. light can't exist if it is made to rest. So, it is not deflected by electromagnetic fields.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."
- Lao Tzu
Like and unlike the proverb above, the solution to a problem begins (and continues, and ends) with simple, logical steps. But as long as one steps in a firm, clear direction, with long strides and sharp vision, one would need far, far less than the million of steps needed to journey a thousand miles. And mathematics, being abstract, has no physical constraints; one can always restart from a scratch, try new avenues of attack, or backtrack at an instant's notice. One does not always have these luxuries in other forms of problem-solving (e.g. trying to go home if you are lost). |
