Department wise achievements:

Aerospace Engineering:

Aerospace Engineering department once again reaches the limits of sky during the first US-Asian event held from March 10, 2008 to March 15, 2008. US department of defence is amongst the list of eminent organizers. There were total 12 contender out those four were from India. The aim was to demonstrate the micro-aerial vehicle and unmanned ground vehicle technology. The task was to rescue the hostages who were trapped in a bank building by assisting the commandos with the unmanned micro vehicle technology. The team from IIT Bombay was awarded by the Certificate of recognition as there was no prize as such.

The performance of indigenously developed IR-suppressor for engine exhaust duct of Advanced Light Helicopter masterminded by the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Bombay is proved successful by ground tests conducted in RWR&DC HAL - Bangalore, in Dec'07.
The Student Satellite Initiative is a landmark project taken up by IIT-B students. The plan is to build a fully functional miniature satellite in less than two years which would then be launched by ISRO using the PSLV. This will entirely be a student initiative with mentorship provided by ISRO scientists and IIT-B Professors.

Pratham, a micro satellite project to fulfill the long cherished dream of students and of IIT Bombay has taken of the start and is expected to become real within two years. Satellite will fit in an 18*18*23 cms cube and will weigh not more than 10 kg so one can imagine the miniaturization that would be involved in making it. Currently students are on the verge of making history by completing the concept design phase.

Chemical Engineering:
Department of Chemical Engineering was established with the assistance of Soviet Union under a UNESCO aid scheme in 1958. Researches involve Unit operations (Heat Transfers, Mass transfer and Fluid Mechanics), Automation in Chemical Industries, Processes (Organic & inorganic) & Technologies (Cellulose, Fuel and Electrochemical).

Recently the department has started new research project 'Biosynth' to open the new frontiers in the field of science. Thisis the first ever student's initiative for the establishing a self reliable plant for the synthesis of Biodiesel at an institute level. The blend of vision and technology under the guidance of many eminent faculties is providing the right platform for the development of a technology to synthesis the non renewable resource. This can also help our country by reducing the financial burden of import of fuel.

Chemistry Department
Chemistry Department was founded in 1965. It has now developed into one of the major teaching and research centres in India. Apart from the B.Sc, M.Sc and five years integrated M.Sc programs, there are around 163 students enrolled for Ph.D. under the supervision of 29 faculty members. The department has produced many academicians and laureates in its field.
