Metallurgical Engineering:

Remember your chapters of metals and metallurgy? Was it something that fascinated you? Then opt for metallurgical engineering that deals with all sorts of metal related areas. The three branches under this are Extractive or Chemical- Extraction of metals from ores; Physical or Mechanical- study of nature, structure and physical properties of metals their alloys and methods of converting refined metals into final products and; Mineral processing- gathering mineral products from the earth’s crust. Metallurgical engineers work in any one of the above fields.

Career Prospects:

Metallurgists are employed in foundries, heat treatment shops, rolling mills, etc. industries. They are also employed in research laboratories, industries and plants extracting and processing metals like iron and steel, nickel, tin, copper, zinc, aluminium and brass etc. Tata Iron and Steel Company at Jamshedpur and steel plants of Durgapur, Bhillai, Rourkela and Bokaro also employ them.
