@ all:

dont follow a fixed order of branches blindly

A few years ago, elec was way ahead of mech ,and chem was nowhere{ppl used to leave it sayin its chemistry (wtf)).However, things have changed and you see these branches matching up to elec if not doing better.(thats the scene at top colleges; Last year I had a look at the 2007-2008 placements @ IIT R  b4 filling my choice sheet. mech had an avg of 8lpa , chem was 7.5lpa, ece was 7.4lpa, ee was 6.5lpa, meta 7.2lpa, CS 8+ lpa, paper pulp 7.5lpa)

IITs are the best colleges in the country.When you passout from IIT,  you are the most preferred guys in your field.Thats why you see all branches which have a good core sector doin well in placements.Sometimes, even those branches which dont have a big core sector do well because of the non core companies takin a lot of ppl from them{For ex  IIT D textile guys gettin placed in finance companies and earnin more than some of the CS guys}.But , there is an element of risk involved in going for textile,paper pulp, biotech as they dont have a lot of core companies.However, its not the same with chemical, metallurgy,nav arch and process as they have enough core companies{ for the number of students doin that course.  }

Thats why, if you arent interested in any particular branch you should opt for any branch @ IIT which has a good core sector {in India}  and has scope for higher studies  instead of takin up a "good branch" somewhere else.

Sometimes its a good idea to  take up a specific course like nav arch.{If u dont wanna go 4 MS)Nav arch is taught at only IIT KGP and IIT Madras.There ll be just 80 good naval engineers passin out each year. There are a lot of shipping and oil companies which ll need these engineers.
