Its definately not madness when 40%  of the people who give JEE go for a drop.(This was told to me by a prof from iitb)

Thats why the no. of people giving the exam have risen over the years.

I know so many success stories of people who have gotten through with flying colours after taking a drop.

There is no harm in taking a drop, but there is a tremendous amount of pressure involved in it,because its your last chance for getting through JEE. (a friend of mine, who is a dropper told me this)

But your chances are definately more, because you no longer have any board exams to contend with.

You can join NIT trichy and then go for a drop, but if you study for JEE during your first year, then your acads/extra currics etc are affected.

If you really think that you can make it,then go for a drop.

I would suggest you join NIT trichy, and then think about the drop.
