Atomic wt s are relative weights not absolute wts & he use of relative wts meant that sm reference had been selected as the basis of comparison. the ref chosen was initially H than was O (still later it was C-12) .this was more or less an arbituary choice but it was baswd on sound considerations They are as follows 1.it was known that O combined with nearly all elements 2. wt of other elements that combined with fixed wt of O could be conveniently determined 3.it gave a value of nearly 1 to lightest atom i.e of Hydrogen & thismeant that wt assigned to all the elementswould be equal to 1 or larger & also close to whole numbers.
