Hostel Life

The IIT Delhi institute has 11 hostels, 9 for boys and 2 girls, named after the major mountain ranges of the country. Almost every hostel has both single and double seated rooms. Each hostel has a TV room, a computer room, a Table-Tennis room, an indoor sports room, a music room, and a library with a reading room. The hostel is managed by the secretaries from the pre-final and final year students. The mess menu and the mess budget utilization is completely decided by the Mess Working Committee comprising of students from each year. Each hostel in addition has a basketball half-court each along with a gym.
The vastness of the IIT Delhi campus and the ban on usage of motor-powered vehicles by students (like other IITs) makes bicycles, the chief mode of transport inside the campus. Institute buses also ply between hostel and academic area.
No student is allowed to change his/her hostel i.e., a hostel becomes a student 's home for the entire duration of his stay in the Institute! This fuels inter-hostel rivalry to epic proportions with the fight for points attaining fever pitch in inter-hostel competitions under BRCA (Board for Recreational and Cultural Activities), BSW (Board for Student Welfare) and BSA (Board for Sports Activites) which are spread over the entire year. Cheering and jeering are a common sight during these events!!! Kumaon slogan goes something like 'door gagan me ek tara' while the jwalamukhi hostel slogan is 'we will, we will rock you'. The number of inter hostel events along with non-comp events renders the entire calendar jam-packed, with something or the other happening almost everyday. The first year students also have to complete 100 hours in any of the NCC (National Cadet Corps)/ NSS (National Social Service) or NSO (National Sports Organization,) which in general makes their schedule heavily packed.
Also, each hostel organizes a house day in the month of April, which is the annual day cum farewell to the seniors of the hostel. The hostels are decorated based on a theme and students can invite their friends from other hostels to enjoy the cultural programme presented by them.
Also, Student - Teacher Interaction Council (STIC) organizes STIC dinners at all hostels to bridge the distance between these two. The students are free to invite their professors with their families.
There are almost no time restrictions on students, to be in the hostel or inside the IIT campus. One is allowed to walk out/in of the hostel/institute freely at any point in day or even night.Students take full liberty to make use of these rare privileges for learning or just plain fun! The city life outside is amazing, specially the Saket/ Green Park areas nearby.
Right outside the main gate is the Safdurjung Development Area (SDA) market which has some good restaurants, along with some most popular hangouts in Green Park/ Aurobindo Place/ Vasant Vihar (Priya complex)/ Saket. In a nutshell, IITD is located in undisputedly the best place amongst other IIT 's, owing to its proximity to the vibrant city life of Delhi, if you want to have lots of fun too
