this metallurgy is known as cyanide pecess or mac-aurther forest prcess where formation of complex takes place.first under stand the reaction in the process as follows Ag₂S + NaCN +air +water

NaAg(CN)₂ +Na₂S,this reaction is actully reversable in nature so only by the help of oxygen and water Na₂S is converted into Na₂SO₄so chances of reversability gone out and yield of complex increases.after this we put Zn for metal displacement to obtain spongy silver than by fusion with oxidising agent KNO₃ WE properly obtain compect silver.i think you understand that why we cannot get by direct process.
