reagent for this reaction is periodic acid formula HIO4(HIO4.2H2O).this reagent is used for fission of viccinal glycol only so there is no reaction with (c) in following compounds.in first case gleceraldehyde formula CHO-CH(OH)-CH2OH consume 2 mole of periodic acid to form 2HCOOH +HCHO,in dihydroxy acetone OHCH2COCH2OH consume one mole of per iodic acid to form HCHO and HOOC-CH2OH.in each case side product is HIO3.this reaction is used for sepration of viccinal and non vicinal glycol. | |||||||||||||
