reagent for this reaction is periodic acid formula HIO4(HIO4.2H2O).this reagent is used for fission of viccinal glycol only so there is no reaction with (c) in following compounds.in first case gleceraldehyde formula CHO-CH(OH)-CH2OH consume 2 mole of periodic acid to form 2HCOOH +HCHO,in dihydroxy acetone OHCH₂COCH₂OH consume one mole of per iodic acid to form HCHO and HOOC-CH₂OH.in each case side product is HIO₃.this reaction is used for sepration of viccinal and non vicinal glycol.
