The carbon atom adjacent to the functional group is alpha , the next is beta, the next gama and so on.For ex.

CH3CH2CHO
 
The alpha , beta ,etc. is not used in IUPAC nomenclature, where we use numbers.
But this terminology is still used, for ex. in aldol condensations we say that it is the reaction given by aldehydes having alpha hydrogen( attached ofcourse to alpha carbon).
