Since you have interest in Bio,you definitely should pursue it.As far as IIT's are concerned, for a subject like biotech which is so new,the best place to study is the IIT's.IIT-KGP's biotech dept is considered to be the best in the country with it's cirriculum being followed by the NIT's who are going to open biotech courses.Regarding the prospects of the subject, right now as it stands it is the most challenging field as well as very open but in India, things haven't developed as yet but in 10-15 years time,India will definitely advance a lot in the field. The fact that the subject has so much importance nowadays can be gauged from the fact that the NIT's are also going to open UG courses in this field. As far as ranks are concerned,in IIT KGP you need ranks around 2500 to get B Tech and 2700 for dual degree. In roorkee and guwahati you need ranks of about 2900-3000.One thing about this field is that higher studies is a must to prosper unlike other subjects where B Tech degree is enough.Since you are interested in research,I don't think that's a problem.I can't say much about other IIT's but in KGP,they have spent an enormous amount on instruments amounting to crores.Initiatives have been taken and authorities are going to spend more money in this field considering it's potential for research.
