Hey this is quite simple:
Use the formula f = (D

)/4D ...........(1)
Where D = distance between obj and screen
x = shift of the lens by trial method. here x = 10

f = focul length of the lens = 40 cm
Solve the eqn (1) and you will get two value of D: 170 and -10.
The -ve value is rejected by physics and hence the answer is 170 cm
Remember this process can only be used if real image is formed by the lens.
