Organic chemistry is very systematic chemistry. It is based on certain basic concepts. For understanding organic chemistry one has to be through with the basic concepts. It will include nomenclature ( both IUPAC & common names), fission of bond - homolytic & heterolytic, reaction intermediates which are result of fission of bond - their formation, stability, geometry and typical reactions, electronic effects operating - inductive,electromeric,resonance/mesomeric & hyperconjugative. Start from simple book, do not jump to big names under pressure from seniors. Once you have rough idea about these concepts then go to higher books; each time pay attention to understanding the topic and its application in solving questions- reasoning out the answer.Don't jump to next topic unless you are satisfied that you have throughly understood first. Don't be scared by the large number of reactions, you don't have to memorise them, each topic has typical reactions, which you will understand gradually.Last but not the least- love organic chemistry, it's fun working on problems in organic.
