hi What we are taught in schools may not always be accurate information. Most people are taught to believe that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. He did not invent the light bulb; he invented what we know and use today, which was an improvement to previous inventions of electrical lighting. The actual inventor of the very first electric lighting was by Humphry Davy. In 1809, he invented the original source of electrical lighting using two wires, a charcoal strip, and a battery. Since his invention, there were many other men who had tried to improve this idea and invent their own form of electrical lighting. These people were James Bowman Lindsay, Edward Shepard, Joseph Wilson Swan, Henricg Globel, Herman Sprengel, and Henry Woodward, and Warren De la Rue. All have succeeded, but none were practical or long lasting except Joseph Wilson Swan's bulb, which would last approximately 13 and a half hours. It wasn't until 1879 when Thomas Edison had invented a carbon filament that would burn for at least forty hours. He had evolved his designs from a patent that he purchased from Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans. With his great mind, wonderful thinking, and ambition, he had made a longer lasting electric light bulb in 1880. It burned for over 1,200 hours using a bamboo-derived element. There were very many men working on a creation for a form of longer lasting, safe, and economical electrical lighting. Thomas Edison was not the original inventor. He was just the inventor who had succeeded the most, and did the best job. He made quite a few improvements and invented seven of the elements inside of the electric light bulb in order to make it much longer lasting. These elements include the parallel circuit, a durable light bulb, an improved dynamo, an underground conductor network, devices for maintaining constant voltage, safety fuses and insulating materials, and light sockets with on and off switches. Edison spent several years after this putting together the electric industry, so that this new source of lighting would be used throughout the world, on streets, in homes, and in businesses. More recently, a man named Philips had invented a light bulb that lasts at least 60,000 hours. It uses magnetic induction, and is usually used in larger businesses. This light bulb was invented in 1991 !!!!! |
