linear momentum is conserved in the direction in which LINEAR IMPULSE IS 0.
and u must be knowing that we neglect the impulse due to gravity in all cases.... so u can conserve momentum in vertical direction for the WHOLE SYSTEM.
u may note that if u consider only ball or only the sand , then an impulse due to normal reaction acts on it so momentum can't be conserved for them separately...
but still i m confused because heap of sand is lying on the ground and so its velocity remains 0.... how can momentum be conserved!
