Well.
It is almost similar to charge in electrostatics......
All relations, formulae, expressions in magnetism are dependant on pole strength.
The magnetic moment depends in pole strength. The strength of magnet, the magnetic force etc. all depend on pole strength.
What mass is to gravitational field, charge is to electric field is what pole strength is to magnetic field. It is its origin.
There would not have been anything like magnetic field w/o a pole........
