It can be easily done if you know how to integrate:- Mass/length=M/L Let us select an element of the hanging part of the chain dx. Mass of this part is dm= dx.(M/L). Potential energy of this potion if the table is chosen as 0 potential surface= -dmgx(-ve because the part is below the zero potential level) =-M.dx.gx/L Integrating we get -MgL./18. Here the work done is +ve of the net pt. energy of the hanging chain. |
