if temp. is not decreased....then the diazo compound yields chlorobenzene and nitrogen gas....that too with explosion....because bond formed b/w Cl and phenyl is very strong and high energy is released....
so temp. is decreased to prevent it...
in case of aliphatic .....the aliphatic chloro compounds are formed....which form carbocation in aquous solution and then alcohol is formed....
