vigorous oxidation of benzene by hot acidic KMnO4 gives oxalic acid...
and the do kolbe's electrolysis to form acetylene...
well...i have read that benzene doesn't get oxidized easily but i have read a reaction named "addn. of ozone in benzene" which forms 3 molecules of glyoxal.. so may be it can be oxidized be KMnO4!
