just giving a easy way for calculating this, hope its useful
2M + (x/2)O2
  M2OX
5gm                     9.44gm
clearly increase in mass due to addition of oxygen = (9.44-5)= 4.44gm
1 eq. mass of any metal always reacts with 8gm of oxygen
in this case 5gm of metal reacts with 4.44 gm of oxygen
so mass of metal required to react with 8gm of oxygen = eq. mass of oxygen
                                                                                = (5*8)/4.44
                                                                                = 9.009gm
